WESTERN AUSTRALIAN HERON SAILING ASSOCIATION President: Anthony Dvorak
Secretary: email
In Western Australia we refer to the Heron as “The Family Class”. Herons are generally sailed by a parent and son or daughter as crew. The class provides the parent with an ideal platform to pass on to the child, their knowledge and sailing experience, whilst enjoying tight, competitive and tactical racing. In this context it will provide a perfect accompaniment to kids who are also learning to sail on a Mudlark or similar small boat.
Even if you have no previous experience the Heron is a great way to get into sailing. Herons have built-in buoyancy and can be righted quite easily if capsized. They have only two sails, so as a beginner, you don’t have the added confusion that spinnakers can provide for novice sailors. But, if you do have some sailing experience and you have young children/grand-children, you should not miss this opportunity to pass on your skills in this wonderful family boat.
Herons are sailed at two Clubs in Western Australia: Perth Dinghy Sailing Club and Shelley Sailing Club
The Western Australian Heron Sailing Association maintains a list of second-hand Herons for sale. The prices of these vary from around $800 to $2000. All enquiries to Anthony Dvorak. (08) 9437-5552 or email Notice of Race State Championships
